The cost of personal growth.
What are you sacrificing for personal growth?
When it doesn’t cost me anything I don’t grow.
Think in your life – things you had to give up to achieve a goal. How have you grown from that experience? It’s easy to keep doing the things I’ve always done. Anyone can do that. Even when it’s not serving us sometimes we keep doing it because it’s familiar and we know the results or consequences. It might not be a great result but it’s tolerable.
We think the pain of change is worse than the pain of progress.
Pain in progress is doing the hard thing now so that it becomes easier later.
Hard now and easy later. Or easy now and hard later.
It’s always a choice.
The pain of change is not harder. Knowing I am working towards a greater vision I have for my life is much better than doing the thing that doesn’t serve me but gives me pleasure in the moment.
We can learn to delay gratification. WOW, what would it feel like to have the muscled body you want, cross the finish line or be the healthiest version of yourself. Whatever your goal? Build the business, have a great relationship, get out of debt, be confident.
That doesn’t come close to saying no in the moment to what is not serving me. But I have to be clear about what I want and commit.
It takes a different version of me to sacrifice something for the sake of growth.
When you have R10 million and I ask R100 of you, you will give it without hesitation. You won’t even miss it.
But when you have a R1 000 and you have to give away R100 it’s going to be harder. You are sacrificing more because it’s 10% of your money and not 0.001%.
This works in all areas of life.
If I have to give up shouting at someone when I’m angry it will take me to grow. I have to find another way of managing my anger and I’m growing by doing it.
When I want to give up sweets or wine to be healthier. It’s going to ask of me to self regulate instead of having it.
When I want to spend money on something I didn’t plan, it’s going to take effort to remind myself of my goal and say no to the thing.
Autopilot is easy. We can all drive a car without thinking. There is nothing excellent about it.
But what is awesome…. is the person that can do the hard things even when it’s inconvenient, hard and they don’t feel like it.
